Dr. Michael is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of Alabama. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Samford University and a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from the University of Montevallo. In addition to his practice as a clinician, Kent is an adjunct professor at Samford University and the University of Montevallo, and also offers leadership consultation and training for organizations. He is married, and the father of three children.
Areas of FocusAs a Marriage and Family Therapist, Kent works with individuals, couples, and families on a wide range of issues. In addition to his interests in marriage counseling, pre-marital counseling, and family counseling, Kent also works with those who have concerns regarding parenting, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, spiritual issues, the management of stress, academic challenges, and more. He has a particular interest in working with university faculty, students in higher education, and with other clinicians in the field of mental health.
Kent also provides leadership consultation and organizational training for a variety of contexts (especially churches, businesses, and schools). Elements of this part of his work include individual coaching from a systemic perspective (for ministers, business owners, and educators), managing burnout, and improving functioning in personal or professional relationships. Drawing on his experience and knowledge of systems, he enjoys leading seminars in a variety of contexts: for church leadership and staff, in business and professional contexts, as well as in numerous educational settings (including administrators, faculty, students, and parents). Kent may also serve as a mediator or consultant to organizations enduring highly stressful elements of conflict or strain.
Hope, Help and HealingKent understands that life can be more difficult than we anticipate. As we navigate relationship issues, family dynamics, or career struggles, we often get stuck. It is here that therapy may help. Kent draws especially from Bowen Family Systems Theory to help individuals, couples, and families utilize their internal resources to understand and respond better to challenges in their lives.

ABOUT COVENANT COUNSELING
We are a group of licensed professionals who seek to maintain the highest professional standards in our fields and whose Christian faith is central to our lives and practices.
Founded in 1994, we are grateful to serve Birmingham and the surrounding areas, offering counseling for individuals, couples, and families.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A first session typically begins by meeting the counselor and going over a few aspects related to confidentiality. The counselor will want to know what brings you to the office and will often try to gain a better sense of additional contexts. Depending on the situation, you may begin to develop initial hopes or goals for your time together, to provide greater clarity on the focus of your counseling.
Our counselors work to provide a supportive and caring environment. Issues or dynamics can then be explored and addressed towards facilitating the needed or desired change.
